Thankfully It’s Still Summer

Friday, August 31st, 2007

Because Autumn In New York is depressing. I’m talking about the movie. Actual autumn is grand as are all the other seasons. But the film? Well, check out the montage, then check out the movie, and see if you agree.

I’m Scared. Hold Me.

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Clowns may well be some of the freakiest things this world has to offer. I hate them. I hate them. I hate them.

That’s why I was highly disturbed to learn that the New York Circus Arts Academy exists.

But then I was quite relieved when I realized that it’s not clown school. It’s an athletic, fitness, circus-gymnastics kind of place. They offer classes in Aerial Acrobatics, Aerial Silk, Conditioning and Flexibility, Acrobalance, and Trapeze.

Phew. I feel better now.

The next session starts September 10. Register now so you can join the circus like you wanted to when you were a kid.

Game Set Match

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

The U. S. Open comes to town this week. From now until September 9, professional tennis players will flock to Corona–that’s Queens–and duke it out with rackets and balls. Heh. I said “rackets and balls.” Ha. I’m so twelve.

Flushing Meadows Park will be the home of 2007’s last Grand Slam tournament.

Bag it, Mommies

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

When women have children, they still like to shop. I guess. I wouldn’t know:

1. I have no children.

2. I’ve never liked shopping.

However, Manhattan moms may like to shop so this is a good thing for them. Moms On Madison is sponsored by Cookie Magazine and Divalyssious Moms. Divalyssious Moms founder, Lyss Stern (hence the wackadoo spelling–I’m betting her name is Alyssa anyway), has created a great day for moms.

On September 8, 2007 between 9 and 11 AM, Madison Avenue (57th — 86th Sts) will become family friendly for the third year in a row. “No Strollers Allowed” signs will be replaced by lots of children’s entertainment. Mommies will have access to Bonpoint, Calypso, Catimini, Chloé, David Yurman, DKNY, Fragments, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Liz Lange Maternity, Oilily, Petit Bateau and Ralph Lauren.

To top it all off, the event benefits the non-profit charity organization The Art of Elysium.

Lick Em All Up

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Crumbs
1114 Avenue Of The Americas
New York, NY 10036
212 221 1500

Scenario: You’re in Bryant Park and you’re jonesin for dessert of the sweet variety.

Get up from the Reading Room or the lawn or wherever you happen to be sitting and cross the street to Crumbs. Trust me, it’s worth the short walk.

Crumbs bakery features humongo cupcakes in flavors like pistachio and peanutbutter and birthday. The icing is supersweet and the good folks at Crumbs actually inject the icing down into the center of the cupcake. So icing is on top and inside. INSIDE!!!!

Also, Crumbs makes their own sodas, teas, and coffees. Homemade soda is supersweet and supergood and comes in all different flavors. The tea and coffee is iced or hot and also has several varieties for your choosing.

Ten bucks will get you two vanilla sodas and a pistachio cupcake (with the small amount of extra change falling in the tip jar). That may seem expensive even for New York prices, but truly, the cupcake is for two to four people. Maybe for one person who’s really hungry and chooses to eat cake instead of a meal.

Once you have your bag of goodies, you can cross back over to Bryant Park and lounge around as if you’d never left.

MTA Mysteries

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

A little rain kinda sent the MTA for a whirl a few weeks ago. Torrential downpours made the subways come to a standstill. Wretched heat made for an abundance of angry pedestrians who usually take the subways. Busses were packed. Taxis were non existent. It was a mess.

However, a second rain came and the MTA was ready. The pumps were working. The sewers took in the water the way they were supposed to.

Proof that New York City continually bounces back no matter what it comes up against.

People may complain. Why do we pay so much money for a system that doesn’t work? But it does work. Public transportation does have flaws, but it’s the entity that keeps the city alive. Snafus come up and we deal with them. One day of havoc does not make a whole system null and void.

For an intriguing look at the subway life, check out Subwayland: Adventures In The World Beneath New York. Randy Kennedy takes us through a maze of characters and events that would be unbelievable anywhere else. But in New York, it’s just another day in the city.

MetaNY

The Museum of the City of New York
1220 Fifth Avenue
New York, NY 10029
(212) 534-1672

Fall in love with New York City all over again. Start with a date on the first floor where the exhibits change from time to time. Recently they featured the Glory Days of Baseball and the role of New York in The Spanish Civil War.

Climb up the winding staircase for a second date with their permanent collections of toys and Broadway shows. Also stop by the galleries of paintings and sketches.

Seal the deal by watching a film that shows how the city became The City.

Small enough to finish in under two hours and suggested admission is a pittance. Go once and then you’ll have to keep going back to keep that passion alive.

Drinking Under The Stars

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

The Delancey
168 Delancey Street
New York, NY 10002
(212) 254-9920

Rooftop! Rooftop! Rooftop! The Delancey features wooden benches and huge jungle-like plants. In the middle of the jungle is a water feature. Also, if you go to the edge, you’ll view all the lights in city windows coming on as the sun sets. You’ll be mesmorized by the atmosphere that overlooks the Williamsburg Bridge.

The service here is spectacular both inside and out. However, with the summer coming to a close, don’t spend your night inside. Go up onto the roof. Any roof in New York is the place to be. The Delancey offers an extra perk with laid-back clientele who are all looking for a good time.

Writers Sweeping Across Gotham

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

New York City is the place to be for writers. Publishers abound in every neighborhood. Small presses, free papers (I’m sure the New Yorkers reading this have run into those people who are handing out the Daily News for free by now), books in every store. We’re a very literate city–reading on subways and busses. Writers may still struggle, but here’s a way to hone the craft.

The Gotham Writers Workshop is a fun way to brush up on the basics, receive feedback from peers, embark on a new writing adventure, and network with people who understand who you are and what you do, and most importantly, why you do it.

Their class format ranges from one-day workshops to ten-week stints. They meet several times periods in different locations so there’s something for everyone. For writers who don’t want to travel, Gotham also has online classes.

The instructors are people in the know. The comedy classes showcase standup comics as the professors. The poetry classes introduce you to poets. So you learn from people who know what they’re doing.

If you’ve never picked up a pen to write or if you’re a freelancer for a living, sign up for a workshop. It’s a uniquely wonderful experience.

Go West, Young Ones

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

thebull2.jpg

MECHANICAL BULL. Need I say more? Johnny Utah’s, which opened on July 27, is the only place in all of NYC that has a mechanical bull. Can you believe that the city has been bereft of one until now?

Located under the Rockefeller Center hotel, the Western-BBQ-influenced Johnny Utah’s is huge. It has two bars, a back dining area which looks like a vault, a front dining area in the round, and a ring of fire (read: wrought iron ring with votive candles here and there). In the center of it all is the bull. The bull begins to buck at 9 PM sharp. Then it goes on for about fifteen to twenty minutes and takes a break for about half an hour. Then it goes on again like that for the night.

The drinks are huge. HUGE. The beer comes in barrel mugs and the drinks are all doubles. While one mixed drink may set you back about 12 bucks, it will also set you on your ass. Throw back a Texan Punch or Texas Lemonade or Pink somethingorother. You’ll be seeing double. You may also choose from their pages and pages of tequila. Think of it all as liquid courage to climb onto that bull bareback. After all, the bull is the reason you go.

Set yourself free and dare to spend 8 seconds atop the beast.

For the best ride in town, you need to saddle up next to Tom, one of the bull masters, and Chauncey Crayton, the Keeper of the Gate of the Ring of Fire. They’ll help you get one step closer to riding in style.
