The Welcome Wagon–Climb Aboard!

by Christina M. Rau

New York, New York. The city so nice that they named it twice (whomever “they” may be). Frank Sinatra sang about it. Billy Joel sings about it. Writers from Edith Wharton to Candace Bushnell write about it. Hundreds of thousands of people travel to it from around the world and across the country. Some people are lucky enough to live and work there. Some are even luckier and get to play there.

I’m one of those lucky ones. I get to live and work on Long Island in the suburbs. And then I get to play in New York City. Tall buildings. Bright lights. The city that never sleeps. The big apple. Cliché after cliché, New York City proves them right.

Now I get to divulge every dirty detail of my torrid love affair with the city that has seduced me and keeps me under its spell. You wanna know about a street fair? You got it. You want to eat, drink, and be merry? Suggestions here. You don’t know how to hail a cab? I got you covered. Need to know exactly where the A train goes and why it’s also the C and the E but only after certain hours on certain days? I’ll help you out.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m not a city dweller and I’m not the top most expert on all things New York City. But that’s what makes this all that much more reliable and fun. I’ll figure things out for you the way I figure things out for myself.

Now let’s get started. Grab your MetroCard, put on your walking shoes, and bring your camera (but don’t stand in the middle of the crowded sidewalk to take a picture, dangit). Welcome to the New York Blog—New York City at its best.
